Target Group
Males and Females aged 12 to 24 years

 

Service Objective:
To assist Council and the community to address the interests, concerns and needs of young people through the operation of the City Youth Centre

 

Identified Needs:

  • Protection from exploitation by peers and other people
  • Employment opportunities
  • Information and education about health and social issues such as drugs and suicide
  • Opportunities to express their needs and opinions
  • Recreational facilities

Key Activities:

  • Planning and co-ordination – develop and maintain systems for the sharing of information between young people, service workers and related organisations, and work to identify key needs and issues and co-operative responses
  • Promotion and advocacy – promote the interests, concerns and needs of young people to Council, the community and related organisations
  • Consultation and empowerment – provide young people with the means of expressing their needs and opinions and having them acted upon
  • Information and referral – provide information to young people about services available to them and assist them to access those services
  • Advice and counselling – provide an initial point of access for advice, counselling or referral to young people who present with  problems or difficulties
  • Legal and safety – provide young people with information about their rights; recognise and report instances of child abuse and neglect
  • Youth projects - organise/promote/conduct a range of living skills, informational and recreational activities for young people
  • General administrative duties

Youth Policy
The Broken Hill City Council Youth Policy 2005-2010 was developed in recognition of the importance of young people and in response to their diverse needs. The establishment of a centre based model for service delivery City Youth Centre is an important aspect of this plan
Our strategy is to provide a direct channel of communications between young people and the community, involve young people in creating solutions to their own needs and build partnerships with and educate existing youth service providers.
This Youth Plan will be integral to Council’s strategic and economic planning and best management practice.
The 2005-2010 Strategic Plan provides strategic direction for the organisation and will, in the next few years, focus on:
